The Rise of Indian Athletics : Unravelling the Success at Asian Games 2023

The 19th Asian Games held in 2023 marked a pivotal moment for the Indian Athletics Contingent. India finished its Asian Games campaign with a record medal tally of 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver, 41 bronze) to finish fourth rising up from its 2018 tally of 70 medals, which included 16 gold. It was lead by India's athletes, who have won 29 medals with 6 gold, 14 silver, and 9 bronze medals among their astounding accomplishments, which highlights India's athletic prowess in track and field events. Men's and Women's Javelin throw

Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar Jena, both of them met the qualification criteria for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, accomplished a historic feat by clinching the first-ever 1-2 finish in the men's javelin throw event at the Asian Games. Although  with initial technical challenges, Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world champion, managed to successfully retain his title. After his first throw was chalked off due to technical issues at the venue, he managed a season’s best of 88.88m with his fourth attempt to successfully defend his crown.

Annu Rani became the second Indian javelin thrower after Neeraj Chopra to have won an Asian Games gold. Annu took the lead by throwing the javelin 62.92 meters in her fourth attempt. This is her second Asian Games medal. The 31-year-old had won bronze in Incheon in 2014 with a best throw of 59.53m.

Men's and Women 4 x 400 Relay

The Indian men's 4x400m relay team won the gold medal at the Asian Games by finishing first in the final with a time of 3.01.58. The team consisted of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh. The Indian women's 4x400m relay team featuring Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan won the silver medal at the ongoing 19th Asian Games. Inspite of beating the previous Asian Games record time (3:28.68 in 2014 Incheon), the Indian quartet were outplayed by Bahrain, who bagged the gold medal with a new record time of 3:27.65.

Men's shot put

India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor won gold in men’s shot put at the Hangzhou Asian Games.Toor won India its second track and field gold in the event.Tejinder Singh Toor, who previously won the shot put event in 2018 at Jakarta and again in 2023 at Hangzhou, joined an exclusive club of Indian shot putters who have successfully defended their titles at the Asian Games. The other three members of this distinguished group are Parduman Singh Brar in 1954 and 1958, Joginder Singh in 1966 and 1970, and Bahadur Singh Chouhan, who secured back-to-back wins in 1978 and 1982.

Steeplechase

Avinash Sable initiated India's medal streak with a victory in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking a time of 8:19:53. He not only clinched the gold but also surpassed the Asian Games record set by Iran's Hossein Keyhani four years ago, improving it by a little over three seconds.In the women's 3000 m steeple chase Parul Chaudhary won the silver, Priti Lamba bagged the bronze medal in women’s 3000m steeplechase at Asian Games.

Sprints Track events

India's performance in six crucial races – 400 meters, 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 400 meters hurdles – is the country's most impressive since the 2010 Asian Games. In the 1,500m race, Ajay Kumar Saroj won a silver medal with a time of 3 minutes and 38.94 seconds, coming incredibly close to the gold medal, with just a 0.58-second difference. Its a substantial improvement compared to Sandeep Singh's 6.3-second gap in 2010.In the 800m dash, India’s Mohammad Afsal finished the race in 1 minute 48.43 seconds for which he won a silver medal. This was 1.15 seconds faster than the time posted by India’s Sajeesh Joseph in 2010.

India's total medal count accounted for approximately 6.7% of all the medals awarded, and  athletics medals made up roughly 20% of the total athletics medals available this year.
