From Pitch to Podium: Cricket's Olympic Dream Gets Life!

In an exciting turn of events for cricket enthusiasts around the world, the sport we all know and love is set to make its debut on one of the grandest sporting stages of all - the Olympics. As Cricket has been officially included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics along with flag football, softball, lacrosse. This massive development was announced at the 141st session of the IOC held in Mumbai, India. The IOC has come up with this at a great time when the game is booming rapidly with the advent of modern fast paced T20 era. 



“Cricket has evolved over recent years; I can’t speak 50 years before,” said IOC president Thomas Bach in Mumbai at the session. “This great development of cricket, we have been made aware of this, not just in India but beyond. Nita Ambani has given us good advice. We have seen the figures. We discussed this with the Organising Committee of LA.”

Factors

One might make the case that cricket's limited participation by a few nations makes its inclusion on a global platform such as the Olympics questionable. However, it's essential to recognize the fact that India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where cricket enjoys immense popularity, collectively represent a quarter of the world's population. In terms of  numbers, cricket's viewership surpasses that of numerous other sports. The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics has been influenced by several key factors.

One significant development was the launch of the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States during the past summer. Most of the matches were held at a dedicated cricket stadium in Dallas. The league featured prominent teams like the Los Angeles Knight Riders, owned by Shah Rukh Khan's Knight Riders Group which also owns the Kolkata IPL team. Additionally, MI New York, with its owner Nita Ambani, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), participated in the league.

The Format and Teams

A six-team competition will take place for both men and women. It is only the second time that cricket will feature in the Olympics after the 1900 edition in Paris. Devon and Somerset Wanderers from Great Britain won the Gold medal defeating the French Athletic Club Union from France in the two-team competition. The format chosen for the event is T20 cricket, known for its fast-paced, thrilling nature. It's the perfect choice to captivate the Olympic audience, which ranges from die-hard cricket fans to those who might be experiencing the sport for the first time.
